Very useful article confirming quite a few ideas.
I have read before that people are more likely to open up over the phone to a stranger rather than face-to-face. And interesting that it supports the notion that if there is a topic i.e. a common interest, so a vehicle that facilitates communication.
Not using the "elderly tag" on the service. And offering practical help and where people can give something back.
